The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
